Drug resistance could set back malaria control success
25 February 2009 -- The emergence of parasites resistant to artemisinin could seriously undermine the success of the global malaria control efforts. Surveillance systems and research studies supported by WHO are providing new evidence that such parasites have emerged along the border between Cambodia and Thailand.
Global, national efforts must be urgently intensified to control Zimbabwe cholera outbreak
30 January 2009 -- Zimbabwe's cholera outbreak, one of the world's largest ever recorded, is far from being brought under control. An enhanced response is needed to urgently reverse an epidemic that has so far infected more than 60,000 people and killed more than 3,100 since August 2008.
WHO receives funds for children's medicines research with UNICEF
21 January 2009 -- WHO has received US$ 9.7 million in grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to work with UNICEF to conduct crucial research in children’s medicines. The grant will be used to increase the number of medicines designed and formulated specifically for children.
WHO Executive Board appoints regional directors
21 January 2009 -- The WHO Executive Board, currently holding its 124th session in Geneva, has appointed Dr Shin Young-soo as Regional Director for the Western Pacific Region, and reappointed Dr Samlee Plianbangchang for a second term as Regional Director for the South-East Asia Region.
WHO deplores the shelling of hospitals in Gaza
15 January 2009 -- WHO deplores the attack on Al Wafa and Al Fata Hospitals, and the Al Quds which is run by the Palestinian Red Crescent Society. WHO expresses deep concern about the serious implications on patients, medical staff, health infrastructure and the provision of critical health services.
Checklist helps reduce surgical complications, deaths
14 January 2009 -- In trials conducted in eight countries in WHO's six regions, the use of a simple surgical checklist developed by WHO has reduced the incidence of surgery-related deaths and complications by one third.
